Alot of great things happened in Balboa’ s life with Boise State and all the other winners I have been cashing, including the New England Patriots in the 2nd Half to win on MNF.  Miami came out and scored a touchdown in the first half.  The Dolphins showed the Jets how to beat them last week on SNF. The Patriots came out and executed.  Tony Balboa is 8 – 4 since Week 1 in the NFL. There are many enjoyable experiences in life, and betting 1 game at a time all day Saturday and Sunday is in my top 10. The great matchups this weekend start with UAB/UCF on Wednesday Night. The Tennessee Volunteers looked real bad and gave it up. John Brantley proved he was the backup to Super Tim. Washington and Washington State delivered the hits at USC & UCLA, covering as road dogs. Oregon shocked everybody winning going away and sent Stanford home with an “L”. We will follow it all again today in the NFL. Today it gets real simple. Donovan Mcnabb comes back to Philadelphia, the team that shipped him out. He’ s gonna have a chip on his shoulder. Donovan will want to prove he’ s still got it. Michael Vick has fulfilled his business plan, returning to the starting QB spot in the NFL. Redskins/Eagles will be entertaining.  Oakland Raiders are a nice home dog today. It’ s out there.

Don’ t get it twisted – I’ m NOT telling you to change what works…I am encouraging us to pay attention to MLB in our down time. I caught up with a modest home favorite last night – the San Diego Padres…The Padres are real busy trying to choke out the San Francisco Giants for the NL West crown. Those Giants won yesterday and are 2 games up with 4 to play.  Home playoff games are at stake. And don’ t sleep on the NY Yankees. A 350 BILLION  dollar payroll and these guys can’ t even win the division? Tampa Bay is a 1/2 game up with 4 to play. Both teams lost yesterday. Playoffs? Did you say playoffs? It’ s THURSDAY!! Whew!! Football time. Big XII action in Stillwater tonight. Texas A&M is back on National TV for the first time since a decent showing vs Georgia as 7 point dogs in last year’ s Bowl game. I coulda been a contender… Is your dog a Pit Bull? Has that underdog demonstrated they can even stay on the field with the perennial powerhouse? Insecure sports bettors bet the name, not the game…In other words, the goose is sold on the reputation of the headliner. The underdog never gets a second look. ” Penn State is gonna kill Temple” – the goose lives in the past. The real truth is sports is big business. Tradition is big, and landmark victories is where new traditions begin. So it really is all about winning. Underdogs don’t just turn things around overnight, or in a year. Teams are made up of players. Players are people like you or me. Coaches have to believe in their players, and make their players believe in themselves and trust the guy next to them. The powerhouse has a reputation of playing at a high level. Reputation alone can only win a game if the other team let’ s it. The underdog can either get the shit kicked out of them OR they can fight their way back, inch by inch, 1 play at a time, clawing their way back from hell into the light. Plenty of opportunity to sit back and watch the dog bite this weekend. Balboa starts the weekend playing with House money courtesy of the U. Miami is a part of my pick package. If there was a system to beat the books where would it start? What happens when the plan you had blows up in your face at the window while you are putting the bet in? My answer is this: we are talking about percentage points here, so relax, opportunity is in front of us. Eliminating those mistakes is the result of a successful system. Teams have entire coaching staffs that are put together to eliminate mistakes, and they can’ t do it.  There is a way. I know that because every business will face similar challenges. Every good business started with a plan of some kind. Take the plan and mix it with good stuff. Positive thinking, goal-setting. Michael Jordan. Good ol Mike missed a whole bunch of big shots in his career. He won 6 titles. By the way, talking about Basketball, the WNBA is in the Championship stage. When you run thru your system on the way to the action remember – take the names off the jerseys – it’s just 2 teams giving it all they got out there. So who’ s better?

The Second Half Comeback: A wise gambler can make a ton of money betting on second halves, in particular, betting on the team who is favored in the game but down big at halftime. This does not always hold true so you need to be alert during the first half and look for the right signs. Sometimes the favorite is just flat-out getting outplayed and they are on their way to a big loss. Other times the favorite is simply coasting along and keeping their over-zealous opponent within arms reach. Make sure the favorite still looks calm, cool and collected while they are getting out-performed in the first half. Look into the future and decide whether this game is going to be decided in the last two minutes or if it will continue as an unlikely blowout. With the right team and in the right situation a 17 point halftime deficit can turn into a tie game before the fourth quarter even starts. If you’re only giving up 7 in the second half you now have the favorite +10. There’s a good chance they’re going to come back and win the game.

Go with high percentage plays: If you are the serious-type handicapper who wants to win consistently look for high percentage plays. When we do our necessary homework that provides us with solid information, we can look at the odds that day and spot the high percentage plays. Look for these trends in spotting high % plays: motivated favorites, power house underdogs, “live” dogs, defensive dogs (good defensive teams), disinterested favorites, and/or downtrodden teams.

Home Dog: Never lose sight of the fact that any team, college or pro, knows whether or not it is favored in a game. This does not mean that the athletes are involved in gambling. Radio and TV announcers, newspapers and other forms of publicity are common means of disseminating information. The players, the coaches and the front offices know who is the underdog in every game they play.

No team worth its fans wants to accept the role of the inferior squad in front of their friends, relatives and home town or campus supporters. With this role goes an extra shot of inspiration. It is difficult at times for the linesmaker to properly adjust for this factor. Somehow the allowance in the line is too often not enough. When comparing this factor subjectively with the others, you will many times be able to find discrepancies in the line. May I repeat myself one more time. The linesmaker doesn’t necessarily make mistakes. It is his job to find and anticipate the number that will split public opinion, in terms of dollars wagered, which at best is mediocre. Home dogs are just one more area where he must give way to the Wiseguys.
